1950 Monterey Sport Coupe An interim response to GM's hot-selling hardtop coupes, at least until Ford could roll out hardtops of its own, the Monterey Sport Coupe became Mercury's top offering in 1950, as well as the first car in the division to wear a name of its own. The Monterey was not a hardtop at all, but Mercury hoped that the vinyl top treatment would lend a similar sort of excitement to the lines. As an interim step, it was a solid success.
